The saying goes, ‘Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime’. Providing a framework for sustainable growth and production is inherent to this saying and is central to the One Heart Model and ethos. This is what sits behind the tractor project.
One Heart Uganda purchased a tractor in 2022 to service not only our 22 acres of farmland, but to provide an asset that can also generate income. The tractor and its operators are available for local farmers to hire to plough their land. The funds generated by the tractor business are then reinvested into the farms, and provides an avenue for One Heart Uganda to become self-sustaining.
The tractor project supports the Sustainable Futures element of the One Heart model. The project aims to generate income that can be used to sustain the farm, with profits being used to support the One Heart projects in-country. Sustainability is important to One Heart, which means putting an exit strategy in place to remove donor dependence and ensure the eco-system can exist independently over time. This not only allows us to continue increasing our work in different areas, but provides a strong sense of ownership and dignity for the local team.
The Tractor Project was funded by One Plate, an Australian based NFP, named One Plate independent of One Heart!. They have a vision to nourish and enrich the lives of children in the greatest need, by empowering the locals to develop sustainable food projects for long-term impact to create self-sufficient communities to help children in the greatest need.
